SAN DIEGO -- NextGen Healthcare Information Systems Inc., a subsidiary of Quality Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:QSII), today announced that Southeast Texas Medical Associates (SETMA) has been awarded the prestigious Ambulatory Care Davies Award for its use of the NextGen(R) EMR (Electronic Medical Records) system. The award was presented during a ceremony at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) conference in San Diego.

SETMA implemented NextGen(R) EMR in January 1999 after an exhaustive search. Since then, the system has served as the technology platform for clinical operations and fostered the practice's growth from a single-location, primary-care practice to a multi-specialty practice with three clinical locations, 24 physicians, and 260 staff members. SETMA points to improved quality of care, decreased claim denials, and reduced transcription and supply costs as just a few of the benefits realized through their use of NextGen(R) EMR.

The Davies Award program was originally created by CPRI-HOST, an organization that represents all stakeholders in healthcare focusing on clinical applications of information technology, in 1995 (CPRI-HOST merged with HIMSS in 2002). The program honors Dr. Nicholas Davies, an Atlanta-based practice physician committed to the ideal of improving patient care through better health information management. He was a member of the Institute of Medicine Patient Record Study Committee, which coined the term "computer-based patient record." Dr. Davies was chairman-elect of the American College of Physicians. In April 1991, he was tragically killed in a plane crash with Senator John G. Tower (R-TX). His ideals live on in the Davies Award of Excellence.
